I still remember Winter ’88 vividly when I sat at my kitchen table and wrote this song. Like many artists in their early days, I didn’t have a penny to my name and often found myself without electricity, phone, or even food in my small apartment. Yet, I was happier than ever before, and on my way to living my dream.
I was never a musician in the classical sense; I couldn’t read sheet music, let alone play any instruments. But I could sing a little, and most importantly, I could still write songs that sounded in my head the way they should be recorded later.
„Hey Boy“ was recorded in a ballad-like version in 1990, which I never really connected with and always felt uncomfortable about. Unfortunately, that feeling permeated the entire production of the album, and in the end, the songs had nothing to do with me as an artist and writer. Contracts were contracts back then, and I was bound by them.
Today, 35 years later, „Hey Boy“ is still one of my most beautiful and important songs, and I still believe that it has great potential and deserves to be heard.
Having little knowledge of sound engineering and music programs, I recently took on the task of giving „Hey Boy“ a new sound that closely matches my original vision. For professional ears, the remix is undoubtedly amateurish, but it demonstrates how well this old yet beautiful song from bygone times could sound in the present and resonate with many people.
So, if there’s a producer or DJ out there in the world who also appreciates „Hey Boy“ as much as I do and would be interested in remixing it in a contemporary style, professionally, count me in.
